This scholarship is very meaningful to me because I am a first-generation college student. Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?

I’m gonna level with you, I wasn’t expecting a scholarship around this time. I received word that I had been awarded a scholarship from the OAICU around the time I was told by Social Security that I no longer qualified for disability payments. So when the news came to me that I had been awarded a scholarship, it provided me with much needed relief as I knew my financial aid for what I wish to study at George Fox University was secure. Thank you so very much for awarding me this scholarship!

Why did you choose your college and major?

Originally, I started my freshman year at George Fox University with a major in Mechanical Engineering. Primarily because I wanted to learn more about aviation. But since the school didn’t have a dedicated Aerospace Engineering degree, I went for the next best thing. However, I struggled in the prerequisite classes and I was feeling concerned about if this really was the path I wanted to take. So I decided to schedule an appointment with a school counselor to get my affairs in order. During the meeting, he (the counselor) mentioned that I actually sounded more into the business aspect of things. Since the guy that inspired me to go into mechanical engineering was also a business entrepreneur and filmmaker (that guy being Howard Hughes), I decided to change majors. So, after I got my mother’s permission and an okay from my CAP coach, I changed my major. Ever since then, I’ve done much better in college and I think I’ve found my calling.

After graduation, I plan to…

Get an internship in a film studio to learn more about filmmaking and the business aspect of running such a studio. Afterwards, should things go according to what I have in mind, I can start my own film studio. I’m thinking about going to graduate school for either business or cinematic arts, but I’ll just have to see where the wind blows.

Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?

This scholarship is very meaningful to me because I am able to pursue higher education and continue to study the subject I love and am passionate about. Thank you very much!

Why did you choose your college and major?

I chose to attend Lewis & Clark College because I wanted to attend a school that offered small class sizes, the opportunity to meet a wide variety of students and faculty, and to stay close to home. I chose to pursue Biochemistry & Molecular Biology because I have always been interested in learning more about the mechanisms that carry out the functions of the human body. Due to the liberal arts curriculum at LC, I have gotten the opportunity to take various classes outside of my major, which has allowed me to receive a more well-rounded education.

After graduation, I plan to…

Continue a path in science, apply to graduate school, and hopefully pursue a career in science education.

This picture was taken on the first day of my first science internship.

College or University Name: Pacific University
Major: Accounting
Minor: Japanese
Class standing: Senior
Pronouns: he/him/his

Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?

I am very grateful to be receiving this scholarship. As an accounting major whose program’s requirement is 150 credits to meet the credit requirement for the CPA exam, I will be taking an extra semester. This scholarship will help ease my financial burden for the current academic year and allow me to save more money in preparation for the extra semester I will be taking. Thank you so much for the support and giving me the opportunity to look forward to finishing my undergraduate term strong.

Why did you choose your college and major?

Around the time I started high school, my brother had mentioned taking some accounting classes with a fun and interesting teacher. When I took the accounting classes, I really liked the teacher and the material covered. That teacher told me he was a Pacific University alumnus. I also learned about Pacific University through the high school AVID program, which included a visit to the university. When it was time for me to pick a college, I researched Pacific’s accounting program, and I found it was a good program. Thus, I chose Pacific University because of its accounting program, and I chose the accounting major because I had long decided on it in high school, but it really was thanks to an amazing and fun teacher.

After graduation, I plan to…

After graduation, I plan to study for the CPA exam and then take the CPA exam so I can receive my license as a CPA. Then, I will continue building work experience at firms so I can continuously learn about my profession and become a better accountant. I look forward to being able to help future clients and firms.
