Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?
This scholarship is meaningful to me because of everything me and my family have worked for. My family works hard every day in a country where they don't understand English and being able to relieve this financial stress from me and my family is a blessing. Me and the family live paycheck-to-paycheck and any little help is a huge blessing that I plan to repay in the future. I'm so grateful and blessed. Thank you!
After graduation, I plan to…
Go back home and continue my education with a master’s degree. After getting my masters, I plan to move to California to start a business in the LA area.
Why did you choose your college and major?
I chose my college due to its size and proximity to University of Oregon. I also had to opportunity to continue playing soccer while going to school. I'm still undecided on my post-graduation plans but I would love to continue in work related to my degree, either engineering or computational focused. I also have an abundance of other hobbies like cooking that I would like to further explore.
Why did you choose your college and major?
I chose to attend Reed College because the campus is beautiful, and I was blown away by the academic rigor when I sat in on a class. I chose to major in physics because growing up I was deeply interested in science and topics related to physics like geophysics and physical oceanography.
Even a Physics Major can enjoy art. Enjoying the art at the Ansel Adams exhibit at the Portland Art Museum.

It was meaningful to me and my family because, like lots of people, we were financially impacted by the pandemic. This also gives me an opportunity to continue to work even harder because good things will come from it. Thank you.

Hopefully join a soccer team and be part of their staff.

Misael Madrigal
Hometown and State: Boardman, Oregon
School or University Name: University of Portland
Major: Civil Engineering
Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?
This scholarship immensely helps me financially. Now a senior in college, the cost of pursing a degree at a four-year university is stressful. Like any student, cost is always the main concern when continuing further education, and a scholarship like the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Foundation Scholarship truly helps relieve some of that financial burden. This scholarship is going to help me finish my degree and achieve that long aspired goal of becoming a civil engineer.
After graduation, I plan to…
I plan to graduate the University of Portland in the spring of 2022 and seek employment in Portland, Oregon. My ideal job would be one where I can experience as many areas of civil engineering as possible. I also want to be able to obtain knowledge in both design work and project management. Overall, my goal, with regards to my career, is to be well rounded and have a substantial amount of knowledge of multiple subdisciplines of civil engineering. My educational career goal consists of pursuing a master’s degree a year after graduation. I think it is crucial to continue my education to advance in my career.
Why did you choose your college and major?
Since a very young age, I was always interested in how things worked. I would often disassemble objects to see the mechanical components and how they influenced the movement or function of the object. But something that truly captivated me was the construction field and, to be more specific, how buildings, bridges, or other types of infrastructure were constructed. How a building can stand hundreds of feet in the air and how a bridge can span across a body of water were a couple of the multiple subjects that sparked my interest in civil engineering. Also, what I found truly exciting about the civil engineering field was the process, from when its simply an idea to when it becomes a reality. The amount of time and detail that is implemented into a construction project is fascinating.
Melanie Martinez

Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?
Without scholarships I wouldn’t be able to afford higher education. I have no financial support for education and this scholarship helps drives me towards succeeding in my life. Thank you for selecting me for this scholarship.
After graduation, I plan to…
Help my family and community through financial struggles and to provide educational resources to people on how to manage long-term financial responsibilities.
Why did you choose your college and major?
I chose Multnomah University to be able to find God, so I can be a better person, and to help my family learn more about Christ. I decided on a business major because I wanted to learn about finance so that I could use it to help my family and myself to better understand how to best use our available means.

Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?
The BNSF Railway Foundation Scholarship has had an enormous impact on me and my family. It has taken some of the financial burden off the shoulders of both my mom and dad. In addition to tuition, this scholarship helps me afford things like books, food, traveling, etc. I am grateful for being selected for the BNSF Railway Foundation Scholarship and thank you!
After graduation, I plan to…
After I graduate with my bachelor’s in financial planning and organizational communication, I am planning to work at a law firm and focusing on estate planning. I want to attend law school either immediately after I get my bachelor’s degree or 1-2 years afterwards. Once I graduate law school, I want to pass the Oregon Bar and be an active lawyer.
Why did you choose your college and major?
I chose George Fox University for the Christian values/beliefs, the close-knit community, and chance to participate in baseball. I enjoy learning about investments, real estate, small business, and corporations, which is one of the many reasons why I am a financial planning major. Communication is important in any field of work, which is why I am double majoring in financial planning and organizational communication.
This is a throwback to my Kauai trip with my cousin and three of my good friends. This is one of the most beautiful backpacking trails on the island, running along the Nā Pali Coast. The trail is called the Kalalau Trail.
Mayely Polanco

I am very thankful for receiving this scholarship, and especially because it took off stress from my payment for the semester. The scholarship really came in handy, and it has showed me that my hard work is noticed and paying off. Thank you!
After graduation, I plan to…
Work for an organization that raises awareness, advocates, and fundraises for global health issues. Potentially the Alzheimer's Association, where I am currently an intern.
Why did you choose your college and major?
I chose Willamette because it is close to home, and because it is a private school. I enjoy having small classes and really getting to know my professors. I chose public health and communications because it is a growing field in need of workers and because it felt like a perfect match for what I enjoy. I love working with people and students and raising awareness for global health issues that often affect underrepresented communities the most.
Brian Ramirez
Hometown and State: Pomona, CA
School or University Name: Lewis & Clark College
Major: Economics and Philosophy
Minor: Computer Science and Data Science
Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?
I had my heart set on achieving higher education regardless of the support or lack of support I might receive when applying to college. I had planned to work my body to its bare bones until I walked across the graduation stage. Your support helps make that walk closer to reality and helps me to break records by using your investment to the fullest by double majoring and double minoring. I would never have time to even double major if I had to support my education entirely by myself. Please do reach out again so I can showcase the greatest investment you could have made both morally and financially. Thank you!!!
After graduation, I plan to…
Explore different avenues that both apply my education and will benefit minorities and/or underrepresented populations.
Why did you choose your college and major?
After hearing back from all the colleges I applied to, I finally had to make a decision. I was fortunate enough for L&C to offer me a fly-in opportunity, so I came to visit for a weekend. Throughout the weekend, I met current students and explored the city. At the end of the visit, I was able to be true to myself and have the kind of college of experience I wanted with the support of the school and community. As for why I chose my majors and minors, I found the subjects to both challenge my current perspective of the world and allow me to grow with every new lesson.

“The road to success is often difficult to follow. At times you will fail and reach points where you don’t have the strength to move anymore; however, if you have the will to continue moving forward, you will find that everything you worked for will come with great benefits and bring you a better tomorrow.”
Erick Sebastian Villa Flores
Hometown and State: Cornelius, OR
School or University Name: Pacific University
Major: Chemistry
Minor: Political Science
Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?
Receiving this scholarship is truly an honor and a blessing, as it assists me in continuing my studies without the problematic situation regarding finances. I'm truly grateful and I thank you.
After graduation, I plan to…
After graduation, I plan to continue my future studies by enrolling at OHSU. I have always been interested in entering the medical field and wanted to pursue my goal of becoming a doctor.
Why did you choose your college and major?
The reasoning behind my choice of college and major is that I wanted to pursue a higher education while being as close as possible to my family. I care for them, and they are the reason why I push myself to the absolute limit. In addition, I was always fascinated by the field of science, as it was a form of connection to one of my favorite characters in my childhood named Bruce Banner (David Banner in other adaptations). He was my inspiration to wanting to enter this field.
