Major: International Affairs
Minor: Political Economy
Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?
I would not be able to receive a higher education without the help of financial aid like the NW Natural Scholarship. My college experience has been incredibly insightful, meaningful, and prepared me to begin my career outside of the classroom. Thank you for all your help in providing me the opportunity to meet my academic goals!
After graduation, I plan to…
After graduation, I plan to teach English abroad. I am interested in pursuing a career in education and social justice advocacy and eventually becoming a professor or working in higher education.
Why did you choose your college and major?
I chose Lewis and Clark College because I love the PNW and wanted to go to a smaller college where I had opportunities to participate and discuss in the classroom. I wanted my professors to know me. Through my time at L&C, I have made incredibly meaningful relationships with the faculty and they have become mentors to me in every sense of the word. I majored in international affairs because I am passionate about global politics and human rights, especially regarding worker’s rights and global supply chains. Once I took my first IA class, I knew it’s where I wanted to be the next four years.
Damian Ball
Hometown and State: Turner, OR
School or University Name: Corban University

Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?
Going into this school year, I had little to no savings because my health prevented me from seeking out work to pay for school. I knew finances were going to be difficult in the second semester and this scholarship takes away so much of that unnecessary pressure. Thank you.
Why did you choose your college and major?
To pursue a career in science through academic lab research and possibly as a science teacher in the future.
After graduation, I plan to…
Attend a post graduate university and pursue my career goals.
I am the one in a white button-up. This picture shows me and one of my closest friends, Julio, at our university’s winter networking event! I was able to acquire an internship after this event.
Estefan Cervantes Rivera
Hometown and State: Woodburn, OR

Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?
Before anything else, I want to thank NW Natural and The Alliance who are behind this magnificent scholarship gift. This scholarship couldn't have come at a better time, as there are now two college students in my family. Due to this scholarship, me and my family are feeling better about our financial situation.
After graduation, I plan to…
Work at AKS Engineering and Forestry and come up with various ways of showcasing what I have learned to high school students from my hometown.
Why did you choose your college and major?
I chose to go to college to study civil engineering. I had the blessing of having a civil engineer as my high school mentor and he showed me the beauty of civil engineering.
Corrina del Valle
Hometown and State: Portland, OR
School or University Name: Reed College
Major: Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?
This scholarship has allowed me to finish my last semester at Reed College in the city I call home. Being able to complete my undergraduate studies in Portland, where I have spent so much time growing and exploring, has been incredibly meaningful. I am very appreciative of the opportunity to pursue my degree in such a wonderful place.
Why did you choose your college and major?
I have always wanted to pursue biochemistry and the program at Reed was the best one for me.
After graduation, I plan to…
I will be looking at internships and then graduate programs to study art conservation.
I was in my thesis office between classes working on writing my thesis, which is one of the biggest projects I’ve had the pleasure of being a part of during my time at Reed.
Carlos Fuentes
Hometown and State: Central Point, OR
School or University Name: University of Portland
Majors: English, Environmental Science
Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?
This scholarship meant so much to me because financial aid has always been a stressful topic, and any additional help allows me to focus on performing well in school and not worrying about additional concerns. I want to thank The Carpenter Foundation who have made this possible for me. I am grateful to know that they believe in me and want me to succeed. I will be able to work even harder in school in hopes on one day pursuing a career in journalism.
After graduation, I plan to…
After college, I want to pursue a career in investigative or in-depth reporting. During my time at UP, I have become involved with the student newspaper, The Beacon, and I have served as the copy editor the last two years. I want to tell stories that matter. I don't want a simple 9-5 desk job, but I want an exciting job where I can talk to others, listen to stories, and use my own skillset to amplify their voices to the world.
Why did you choose your college and major?
I chose the University of Portland because I grew up in southern Oregon and I knew that I wanted to stay in Oregon for my college career. I have always loved Portland, and this school has a beautiful campus and small class sizes, both of which I really appreciate. At this school, I can immerse myself in my academic and extracurricular activities, and I have grown tremendously as a scholar and a well-rounded individual as a result of this welcoming environment.
This picture was taken after I was inducted to the Phi Kappa Rho fraternity. I am the person that is holding the flowers and carrying a person.
Moises Gonzalez

This scholarship is meaningful to me because it helps me focus on what really matters in school. It helps relieve some of the financial stress from tuition that has been on my family’s minds. I am grateful, thank you.

Go to Optometry school after a gap year. Then, I would like to open a practice somewhere in the Willamette Valley in Oregon.
Why did you choose your college and major?
I have always been fond of chemistry. I knew coming into Pacific that I wanted deepen my understanding of the world though science, and I knew that chemistry would be a great way to challenge myself. Chemistry also keeps the doors open for other opportunities and gives me a good basis to move into optometry.
Camille Guerrero
Hometown and State: Portland, OR
School or University Name: Bushnell University
Major: Business
Minor: Spanish
Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?
This scholarship is meaningful to me because any type of scholarship opportunity allows me to avoid college debt. Ever since I was young, my family and I needed some type of financial aid. Thank you for all the donors and their gracious support of college students. It doesn’t matter the amount of the scholarship, big or little it goes a long way.
Why did you choose your college and major?
I went to Concordia University in Portland, initially, and attended school there for my first two years. They closed and ceased operations my sophomore year and I had to transfer. Bushnell made the transition easy and provides me with any type of help I needed. I chose a business major because there are so many possibilities that you can do with it.
After graduation, I plan to…
After graduation I plan to enroll in at Portland State University and do a post baccalaureate program in accounting to get my accounting certificate and prep for the CPA exam.
Danelys Rodriguez
Hometown and State: Portland, OR

I am very thankful for this scholarship because it has helped me to focus more on school and academics rather than how I would fund my education.
After graduation, I plan to…
Continue my education and get my MBA.
Why did you choose your college and major?
I chose Warner Pacific University because of its location and small class size.
Devin Zapata
Hometown and State: McMinnville, OR
School or University Name: Linfield University
Major: Finance
Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?
It means a lot to me knowing that some individuals and organizations believe in the younger generations so much that they donate their own hard-earned money. Much of our culture has relied on private charity, and I will do my best to replicate efforts like this to help build better citizens through education. Scholarships allow me to put extra care into my studies while not having to worry about expenses. I am thankful for your generosity!
After graduation, I plan to…
I plan to work for an investment bank helping them make analyses on future assets and companies while working with private firms that decide to launch as an Initial Private Offering (IPO). I hope to continue my education in graduate school after acquiring some professional financial experience.
Why did you choose your college and major?
Linfield has allowed me to make meaningful connections through its alumni and professors. Its smaller class sizes have given me the care to maintain a high GPA. Every course I've taken at Linfield has exceeded my expectations by the dedication and passion its professors carry each day. Through the educational pursuits of finance, my degree has given me financial freedom through investments. I grew up watching my single mother struggle to pay bills and, at one point, we lived out of a car. I aspire to educate myself and others so financial burdens become a thing of the past as I help my own family accumulate generational wealth.
This is a photo of me enjoying a nice glass of wine after working a harvest shift at Elk Cove in 2019. I took a gap year to build up my savings. Thank you so much!
