Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?
This scholarship is very meaningful to me as I am a first-generation Asian American student. My family and I have sacrificed so much and worked tirelessly for my education. I often would work multiple jobs while in school so that I could contribute toward paying my tuition. This scholarship means a lot to me, as it provides not only financial relief but is a testament to my goals and aspirations in the medical field.
After graduation, I plan to…
After I graduate from George Fox University with my bachelor's in biochemistry, I want to attend a physician associate school soon and specialize in emergency medicine.
Why did you choose your college and major?
I chose to attend George Fox University because of its nurturing atmosphere and community, its integration of faith in every field of study, and because the professors always go the extra mile for the students under their care. As a biochemistry major, George Fox has provided me with many courses that align with my undergraduate degree as well as pre-requisite courses to prepare me for graduate school. The support George Fox gives me makes me confident that I will succeed in the future.

Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?
This scholarship means a lot. In plant biology, I learned that money doesn't grow on trees and as a college student that couldn't be truer. Thank you!
Why did you choose your college and major?
I have always loved nature and so biology was an easy choice. I changed my major a couple times, but I came back to my first love. I also desired to go to an institution that is built on Christian values.
After graduation, I plan to…
I plan to pursue some form of graduate school, the exact nature of which is pending. Most recently, I have been fascinated by the possibility of pursuing a PhD in regenerative medicine and tissue engineering.

Julia Maxwell
Hometown and State: Burlingame, CA
College or University Name: Willamette University
Major: Chemistry
Class Standing: Senior
Pronouns: She/Her
Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?
I would like to express my gratitude to Lonza Pharma for the scholarship. A college education is expensive, especially one at a small private liberal arts institution. Nothing can replace the one-on-one help and small class sizes that I have experienced here at Willamette University. Encouragement from my peers and my professors has helped me overcome some imposter syndrome and helped me understand that I belong in the chemistry field. I have five other siblings so there is no extra money for my family to help me out with paying for my higher education. Help from scholarships is what makes it possible for me to attend here and get the college education that I need for me to pursue a career in chemistry.
Why did you choose your college and major?
I chose chemistry as my major because I have always been drawn to science classes and the problem-solving that is involved. I also loved the fact that there will always be more things to discover with experiments.
After graduation, I plan to…
After graduation, I plan to get a laboratory job or possibly continue to get a graduate degree in chemistry.
