Cameron Binaley
Hometown and State: Elk Grove, CA
School or University Name: Bushnell University
Major: History
Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?
Thank you so much for this scholarship. This is meaningful to me because it allows me to pour all of my attention into school without the fear or worry of how I will be able to make my monthly payments.
After graduation, I plan to…
After graduation, I plan to become a police officer with the hope of one day becoming a School Resource Officer and substitute teacher.
Why did you choose your college and major?
I chose Bushnell University because of the small class sizes. This allows me to have a more personal relationship with my professors than what I would have at a larger university. Furthermore, I chose my History major because I believe it is important to understand our past so that we do not make the same mistakes again.
William Garcia
Hometown and State: Vancouver, WA
School or University Name: Multnomah University
Major: Divinity
Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?
To receive this scholarship is such an honor and privilege, also such a blessing. It helps me not only in my finances, but the ability to focus more on my school. I do not take this opportunity for granted. Thank you!
After graduation, I plan to…
After I graduate, my goals are to continue teaching the bible, rightly dividing the word of truth, to eventually be able to plan a church in the future, with those who already have vision for it. To use my skills that I am already nourishing and building, towards my career as a pastor.
Why did you choose your college and major?
The reason I chose this college is I was accepted to the Summit program and my passion lies in studying divinity. The way I got into Summit was by first doing an interview, explaining why I want to be in this accelerating course where I am getting my bachelor’s and then my master’s, God willing, in a five-year program.
This picture was taken in August; I went to a Seattle Mariners Baseball game. My whole life I grew up playing this sport and I still enjoy playing to this day. Also had to represent Multnomah, with the shirt they sent me.
Em Hay
Hometown and State: Hubbard, OR
School or University Name: Pacific University
Major: Environmental Science
Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?
Thank you so much for your generosity in helping me succeed with my education. Scholarships like this help me be able to work and stress less and focus more on my studies.
After graduation, I plan to…
After I graduate, I think I want to take a year or so off from school, to find a program to work for to gain some experience. After this little break, I think I want to go to a graduate school to continue my education.
Why did you choose your college and major?
I chose Pacific University because of the campus atmosphere and the personal attention I got throughout my senior year of high school. No other university took the same amount of time to make sure that I was helped like Pacific's admissions team. Environmental science is something that I am very passionate about. I love nature and biology and I want to be able to make a difference in the conservation of our natural world.
Vy Lam
Hometown and State: Lake Elsinore, CA
School or University Name: Lewis & Clark College
Major: Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?
Thanks to this scholarship, I can become the first person in my family to go to a college! Thank you!
After graduation, I plan to…
attend pharmacy school!
Why did you choose your college and major?
The faculty and student ratio cannot be beat! I chose biochemistry and molecular biology because it fulfills most of medical/pharmacy school requirements.
Trini Luna Vargas
Hometown and State: Troutdale, OR
School or University Name: Linfield University
Major: Biology
Minor: Sociology
Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?
This scholarship is meaningful to me because it shows that there are people out there who are willing to invest in the success of future generations. This idea warms my heart because I know that there is someone out in my community who, without knowing me personally, is willing to provide me the opportunity to pursue my academic goals. And I don’t think there are enough words to describe how thankful I am. This scholarship takes away some financial stress as I try to navigate college as a first-generation student. The process is not easy, but it always uplifts my spirits when I know that there are people in my corner who are rooting for me. So, thank you for giving me another reason to push through struggles, and for financially supporting my career goals.
Why did you choose your college and major?
Throughout my high school career, I always enjoyed my biology classes, it was one of the few subjects in which I always had lingering questions about. Biology textbooks were also really fascinating for me because I just couldn’t and sometimes still can’t get over the fact that our bodies are made up of thousands of cells that perform sophisticated functions. When I started looking at colleges, I would always find my way into their biology departments because I knew that I was going to be taking more courses in this subject. I quickly realized that in big public universities, students didn’t really get the opportunity to have frequent conversations about the topics discussed in class with their professors. And I knew that I wouldn’t be able to thrive in that kind of academic environment. So, I looked at smaller universities and discovered Linfield. When I toured campus, I fell in love with the science building. On my tour I had the opportunity to talk to a student and they had wonderful things to say about the courses and the faculty in the biology department. This experience stuck with me and later I decided to attend Linfield and pursue a major in biology.
After graduation, I plan to…
After graduation, I plan to take a gap year before I apply for medical school. During the gap year, I want to focus on studying for the MCAT and strengthen my application. I have plans to work as a scribe in a local pediatric office to gain more hands-on experience and knowledge. I also want to spend some time shadowing other doctors that work with children, such as pediatric oncologists, to explore other career options. After my gap year, I plan to submit my application and hopefully enroll in a medical school that will prepare me with the necessary knowledge to become a pediatrician.
Jennie Ly
Hometown and State: Salem, OR
School or University Name: George Fox University
Major: Nursing
Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?
This scholarship is meaningful to me because I am working hard in school to be able to help take care of my parents later. I am a first-generation student, and both my parents work minimum wage jobs to help me and my siblings pay for college. It has been very stressful, and I've always felt guilty having my parents help me. I also work three jobs to help with my tuition expenses, but I am unable to commit enough hours at work to pay for everything fully. This scholarship lifted so much weight off our shoulders and made an impact on my life and my family. Now, I can focus on just school without having to stress financially. Thank you so much for helping me in my journey to becoming a nurse! This is a huge help and I'm so grateful.
Why did you choose your college and major?
I decided to go to George Fox because they had a good nursing program, the campus is small enough to recognize everyone's faces, GFU’s Christian beliefs, and I felt like I was at home on the campus tour. I pursued nursing as my major because I love learning about science, the field is diverse, and I desire to make an impact on others. I hope to continue my education to become a Nurse Practitioner.
After graduation, I plan to…
Work as a nurse in a hospital in Portland, OR. I will stay local for a year or two before I apply to become a travel nurse. I want to travel because I have never left Oregon and I truly believe there is so much more out there that I should explore. I am excited for the future.
Bryleigh O’Neil
Hometown and State: Springfield, OR
School or University Name: Willamette University
Major: Sociology
Minor: Psychology
Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?
Thank you so much for the Council of Independent Colleges/UPS Foundation Scholarship! These scholarship funds have allowed me to devote more time to my studies and extracurricular activities on campus by relieving an incredible amount of financial stress. I cannot explain how much your generosity means to me.
Why did you choose your college and major?
I chose Willamette University because of its incredible faculty and staff, the extremely welcoming student body, and the beautiful campus. I decided to major in sociology after taking a few sociology courses and realizing that I was extremely interested in this area.
After graduation, I plan to…
work for an LGBTQIA2S+ organization that focuses on advocating for and supporting queer and transgender youth. As a fellow queer, nonbinary individual, I would like to work to help queer and transgender youth feel more comfortable being their authentic selves.
Stephen Smith
Hometown and State: Elk Grove, CA
School or University Name: University of Portland
Major: Nursing
Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?
Thank you so very much for this incredible scholarship. This scholarship is meaningful to me because my parents have sacrificed so much to afford to send me to college and every penny that I receive to lower the cost of tuition makes their immense effort worth it.
After graduation, I plan to…
return to my hometown and take care of my community. I want to for a local hospital and set up community outreach programs to help increase the health of the people in my community.
Why did you choose your college and major?
I chose the University of Portland because of its amazing nursing program. It is highly respected, and their curriculum will prepare with the right tools to be successful in the field. I chose nursing because I thoroughly enjoy taking care of people. When people are at their lowest, I want to be a beacon of hope by their side to help them in whatever way that I can.
Matilda Tarley
Hometown and State: Portland, OR
School or University Name: Warner Pacific University
Major: Nursing
Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?
I am greatly honored to be one of the recipients of the CIC-UPS Educational Endowment Scholarship. Thank you for the generous support. I am the first in my family to attend college. Coming from a less privileged family has not only offered financial and academic challenges but has helped me realize the value of education. I am a mother of four young boys and currently working part time to be the best student and an example for my sons.
Why did you choose your college and major?
My plan is to complete the BSN program and major in nursing. Warner Pacific University offers diversity of programs, and I am fortunate to be part of this Christ-centered university.
After graduation, I plan to…
I have been working as a certified nursing assistant in healthcare. After graduation, I plan to start an internship and, while I don’t know where I am going in nursing yet, my interests and passions for this career are to the less fortunate and to focus on mental health. Once again, thank you for your generosity. I am delighted that sponsors like you have chosen me for this support.
Joanna Wattimena
Hometown and State: Salem, OR
School or University Name: Corban University
Major: Biomedical Science
Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?
This scholarship is meaningful to me because my family and I have gone through many hardships recently. After having gone through health-related stressors, a car accident, and other things, receiving this scholarship has taken away a big financial burden that was weighing on our family, and I’m extremely grateful. Thank you for choosing me as the recipient of The Council of Independent Colleges/UPS Foundation Scholarship recipient.
Why did you choose your college and major?
Corban’s mission aligns with my own: “To make a difference in the world for Jesus Christ.” The school has and continues to value personal development along with development of knowledge and skill sets that will advance our paths in the changing world. They also value community and value everyone as a person, rather than a name on a page. I chose this college to feel valued as an individual, and to prepare myself in my faith and my knowledge to help build a better world. I chose biomedical science because this is where I am best placed to help the world around me. I find that being able to bring healing to a world that is never lacking in sickness and darkness is a way in which I can do my part with the life I was given. I also chose this major because I enjoy STEM fields and have an analytical brain has helped me to understand critical thinking skills it takes to be a science major, along with how to prep for the medical field.
After graduation, I plan to…
After graduation I plan to go to pharmacy school. My biomedical science degree will prepare me for pharmacy school and prepare me to become a pharmacist. I plan to use my skills gained at Corban to help advance my community as it relates to medicine directly and help in a way that is specific to healing. I will be applying to pharmacy schools this fall and will receive news of acceptance to the schools three months before graduation. Therefore, my plan to become a pharmacist, will be dependent on which schools I get into, but I am actively taking steps to best set myself up for this goal.
This is me on media day for my university’s lacrosse team! I am a captain and am the only senior on my university’s 2nd year team.
