Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?

Recently I’ve been going through a lot of changes such as leaving my old job, distancing myself from my parents, moving out at 17 and moving to a brand-new city not knowing many people in Eugene. I have been struggling a lot with the change and going to Bushnell university without any financial help from my parents has been a major big push back. Receiving this scholarship has really been a relief and a weight lifted off my shoulder knowing that I’m not paying as much for tuition. I’m beyond thankful and grateful for the scholarship so I want to say thank you this means a lot to me.

Why did you choose your college and major?

I choose to go to Bushnell University because of track and field but not only that I wanted to grow my relationship with Jesus and wanted to better myself both academically and as a person. I chose to major in business because I don’t know what I quite want to do after graduating.

After graduation, I plan to…

After graduation, I plan to move back to my hometown which is Central Oregon and Get a good paying job.

Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?

This scholarship was extremely meaningful as it helped me come one step closer to accomplishing a dream of mine: completing my college career with a bachelor’s degree. It has relieved financial stress, enabling me to focus on my studies and to play soccer during college. Additionally, this scholarship has brought me closer to being the first in my family to graduate from college. Thank you for making this possible!

Why did you choose your college and major?

I chose Corban University because it was close to home and provided a strong foundation in Christian values that I can live out in the rest of the world. I chose to major in Business Accounting because I love problem-solving and working with numbers. I’m also passionate about helping others thrive in their businesses. This career will also help allow me to provide a stable lifestyle for my family and hope for my future family generations.

After graduation, I plan to…

After graduation, I plan to begin my career in accounting, where I’ve already accepted a position at Kernutt Stokes. I’m excited to build on the skills and experience I gained during my internship there; and I look forward to contributing to the team while continuing to grow professionally in the accounting world.

Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?

I am so very grateful for this scholarship. College gets more expensive every year, and it is frightening to see that loan debt racking up. My parents are so supportive of my academic journey, but they do not have the funds to help out financially, nor do I believe it fair to ask/expect that of them. Your scholarship helps take some of the burden off me, and it allows me to work a few less hours per week, giving me more time to study. Thank you so much for this gift — I truly, greatly appreciate it!

Why did you choose your college and major?

There were so many factors that led me to George Fox. I wanted to attend a small, Christian university, with a small student/faculty ratio. I also really loved the campus and the community. Fox doesn't have a Chemistry major anymore, so I opted for Biochemistry, but I am really happy with the opportunities and connections it's given me! I love the faculty and my peers here.

After graduation, I plan to…

After graduation, I plan to work for a year before I begin medical school. My goal is to become an OB/GYN and eventually practice in Southern Oregon where I grew up. Long term, I want to own a farm and raise a family, while working as an OB at our local hospital.

Major: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology
Minor: Philosophy
Class standing: Junior
Pronouns: she/her

Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?

This scholarship means a lot to me as I wouldn’t be able to attend Lewis & Clark College without it. It means a lot that I’m able to attend this school so I can pursue further higher education in the future. Thank you so much for this scholarship!

Why did you choose your college and major?

I chose Lewis & Clark because I was able to compete as a collegiate athlete, as well as have smaller class sizes. A major contributing factor to my decision to attend L&C was the financial support I received. I chose Biochemistry & Molecular Biology because I want to continue my education in either the medical field, or research, and the connections I’ve made with professors here will help me achieve those goals.

After graduation, I plan to…

I plan to take a gap year and get my EMT/Paramedic certification. This last summer I worked in an oral microbiology lab at OHSU School of Dentistry which was an amazing experience. I am also considering going back to OHSU to get more experience in a lab setting before I apply to med school or dentistry school.

Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?

I want to thank you for your contribution to my academic endeavors. I've always had a fear of finding myself drowning in debt and never being able to get out of it, even if I tried my best. That fear held me back from moving forward in life. But thanks to you, I can now try my best without having to fear the future but instead look towards the future. I am using the money that you donated to pay for my tuition and dorm. I have a better learning experience than most of my family will ever have thanks to you. I thank you from the bottom of my heart and wish you the best.

Thanks to Linfield's great STEM classes, I want to keep learning more about the world and continue studying at the graduate program in STEM. Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?

Receiving this scholarship is meaningful to me because in the past few years, my family has gone through a lot of changes and there have been many difficult financial decisions. My family and I have always felt a bit stressed when the tuition deadline was approaching, but with this scholarship, now it feels like a weight has lifted off my shoulders and I am extremely grateful. Thank you!

Why did you choose your college and major?

I chose Pacific University because it was near my hometown and immediate family. My older sister is also a Pacific alumna, so I was a bit familiar with Pacific and its community prior to making my choice and attending this school. I also appreciated the fact that Pacific University has a smaller campus and class size in comparison to other colleges and universities. It has made me feel like I am an important member in my community and has helped me to grow closer to my peers, professors, and enhanced my learning as a student.

Christian Lopez-Parra

School or University Name: University of Portland
Major: Electrical Engineering
Class Standing: Senior
Pronouns: he/him

Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?

This scholarship is meaningful to me because it is helping both my family and I by
alleviating some of the financial burden that comes with attending higher education. I have 4 younger siblings with one looking at colleges right now, so any additional help I can get to fund my education is more than my family and I can save for my younger siblings. Thank you so much for the scholarship, it is because of donors like you that students like me are able to pursue higher education.

Why did you choose your college and major?

I chose the University of Portland for a lot of different reasons. The biggest reason was that the school is very close to home and being the oldest and a first-generation college student, I wanted to stay close to my family. After doing research of different colleges, I came across UP and saw that the school has a great engineering program and had smaller class sizes compared to other state schools. I was worried about the lecture hall sizes at other schools and seeing that UP had class sizes like my high school, made it look more appealing as that is the environment where I learn best. I decided to study electrical engineering because I received guidance from the Dean of Engineering at UP about what I would want to do post-graduation. I had entered as a general engineer but didn’t know what specific discipline I wanted to do, and this guidance helped me pick electrical engineering.

After graduation, I plan to…

After graduation I hope to get a job working in power system or renewable energies. I attended a career fair here at UP and was fascinated by what the engineers who spoke about renewable energy and power had to say. I want to work for companies like Portland General Electric, PacifiCorp, or Bonneville Power Administration.

Warner was close to home and it had my major, I chose my major because I am interested in owning my own business someday and hopefully the degree I am pursuing helps me on my journey.

Jennifer Cabrera

Hometown: Salem, OR
College or University Name: Willamette University
Major: Environmental Science
Class standing: Senior

Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?

The scholarship was meaningful to me in many ways. It helped me be able to only have a part time job during the school year in order to pay for my tuition instead of full time.

Why did you choose your college and major?

I choose Willamette University because small student to professor ratio and as a more quiet person I prefer these small classes. I am able to ask questions and communicate with the professor more comfortably. Environmental science is an interdisciplinary subject that really interest me because it supports topics like environmental justice and study of biochemical cycles.

After graduation, I plan to…

Travel and help organizations that support BIPOC communities against climate change challenges.
