Hometown and State: Portland, OR
College or University Name: Lewis & Clark College

Class Standing: Sophomore
Pronouns: She/Her

Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?

The Scholarship is meaningful to me because I would not be able to attend college without it. My parents moved from Cuba to the U.S when I was 5 to give me and my siblings a better life. They worked day and night to be able to support us. I want to make them proud and achieve my dreams. Without the scholarship, I would be unable to do so. Thank you for helping me achieve my goals.

After graduation, I plan to…

After graduation, I plan to go to law school to become a lawyer.

Why did you choose your college and major?

I chose Lewis & Clark because of its campus and academics. I loved that the school was beautiful and close to my house, so I could visit my family if I wanted to. As for its academics, I fell in love with the political science and history programs. I had always loved learning about history and, in turn, about the government. So, when it came time to choose a major, I chose the two that I loved the most.

Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?

Receiving a scholarship like this is so amazing and I very much appreciate it! I give all my thanks to Costco Wholesale for contributing money, time, and opportunity to people like me. It brings a smile to my face that people want to financially bless me, as I know not everyone gets this opportunity. Thank you so much.

After graduation, I plan to…

After I graduate, I want to work at a middle school as a counselor or as a youth pastor at a church. I want to insert myself deeper into the community of Eugene and Springfield and make the community a better and more hopeful place by working with middle schoolers. I want to create an environment where they feel welcomed, loved, and want to encourage them that they are enough and to not go through life alone.

Why did you choose your college and major?

I chose my college and major because I love doing the things I already do, which is hanging with and mentoring middle schoolers in youth ministry. When I decided to go back to school, Bushnell caught my eye the most. I saw a community that not just loves but wants to see their students succeed.

This photo was taken during the summer.  I was with a group of girls that I was counseling for a week at a church youth camp.

Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?

This scholarship is such a blessing and so meaningful to me. I am a Resident Assistant at my University and have been working hard to find a second job on campus to help pay for school. Why did you choose your college and major?

I chose my university because of their strong values and their renowned science programs. When looking at different major options, I settled on biology with a minor in theology because there are so many different careers you can go into in the future to help others.

Pronouns: She/Her

Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?

I am grateful for this scholarship because it allows me to focus more attention on academics and enjoying my last year of college, rather than working. Being a first-generation college student, my family has found it difficult navigating the financial aid and higher education system as a whole. Thank you for this opportunity to finish my degree.

After graduation, I plan to…

Return home to California and work as a registered nurse in a hospital setting. After getting some experience and building my confidence, I plan on specializing in hospice or working with the incarcerated population.

Why did you choose your college and major?

I chose University of Portland because I knew I would get a quality nursing education in four years, while being supported by a strong community. Before I knew I wanted to do nursing, I fell in love with the campus and the city when I visited the first time. I picked nursing as my major because it is a profession where I can have direct contact with people and support them on their best and worst days. My mom is a nurse, and I grew up hearing the impacts she had on her patients, and I always wanted to do the same.

Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?

Thank you for choosing me for this scholarship. As I was looking for scholarships and extra financial help, this appeared, and it was a blessing. Being a first-generation college student, recognition and financial support are such an honor. It also is coming from Costco Wholesale, where my family and I enjoy shopping. Once again, thank you for choosing me for this scholarship.

Why did you choose your college and major?

I chose Bushnell University because, out of all the universities I visited, it felt right. It felt like home. I also love the small class sizes and the relationships you can have with your professors. You aren't just a number in their classes. I chose to major in exercise science because I have always been interested in a career in the medical field. As I got older, I was exposed to physical, occupational, and speech therapists. Looking into those careers, I knew I needed a degree in the exercise science realm.

After graduation, I plan to…

After I graduate, I plan on attending a physical therapy school in California to graduate with my Doctorate in physical therapy. I plan to work in an acute setting along with splitting my time in a pediatric clinic.

Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?

I don’t come from a family with much money, so anything we can get is very helpful. I’m extremely grateful for it and I feel a “thank you” is really the least I can do to repay this amazing offer. Nonetheless, thank you. It really means more to me than one might expect.

After graduation, I plan to…

Apply to a med school, either in Oregon or back at home in Hawaii.

Why did you choose your college and major?

I thought, and still think, Lewis & Clark College is a beautiful and small community of students. The academics have also challenged me to a degree which I like. I chose my major because I was inspired by my grandfather, once a dentist, to follow the pre-med track and (hopefully) become a doctor. I like helping people and take great satisfaction in doing so.

Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?

This year, I have an overload of courses. Although one is yoga, my schedule is tight, leaving me no time to work. I was considering dropping a few classes to be able to find a few working hours and pay the remaining balance on my account. Thanks to the Costco Wholesale Scholarship, I can pay the remaining balance without dropping my English and education classes. Thank you, Costco Wholesale, for supporting Latino students in achieving their academic goals by providing financial aid.

Why did you choose your college and major?

I chose my education major because I enjoy teaching and learning from my students. I minored in English because, aside from loving reading and writing, I want to teach my students how to write academic and personal papers that will ensure them a place in a university. Teaching them literacy is my tool to help my students receive higher education.

Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?

This scholarship was meaningful to me because I am the first in my family to graduate high school and attend college. I also left Texas in faith, trusting God that He would provide my finances for College. And this, to me, is an answer to prayer. Thank you so much again for this gift.

After graduation, I plan to…

I plan to pursue my master's in counseling.

Why did you choose your college and major?

I chose Corban because I wanted to attend a faith-based school that would be grounded and rooted in the word of God. I also chose counseling and psychology because we live in a world where many are dealing with mental health struggles or going through a very hard time. I was challenged by this and felt that the world needs more Christian counselors, and I want to be a part of that. I want to help families and individuals receive breakthroughs and healing through counseling.

Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?

I’m a nontraditional transfer student, a mother, and a young married woman. I just had my baby a couple months ago and receiving scholarships has facilitated my ability to complete my bachelor’s degree with little to no debt. Before I had my baby, I wanted to be the first in my family to earn a bachelors and make a difference, but now I also want to provide a better life for my child and set an example. This year, I became the first married woman and mother to compete at the Miss Oregon USA pageant, placing into the top 13 as a semifinalist despite the controversy of a married, pregnant woman being “ineligible” to compete. This was even though I had been selected to compete prior to my marriage and pregnancy. Although I didn’t win the state title to compete in Miss USA, I received great feedback and support from my community for advocating on body image and showcasing my story as a daughter of immigrants. I was later appointed to be Ms. Oregon 2023 with American Pageants, Inc. As I grow my platform through pageantry and as an artist, I also hope to continue my studies with a graduate degree and eventually own my own business while continuing to serve my community. My previous involvement includes programs such as the Ford Family Leadership Institute and Portland State University’s New Leadership Oregon, campus leadership positions, and civic engagement projects/events in various Oregon counties. I’m applying to the accelerated Willamette MBA program this fall. The scholarships I’ve received have made attending undergrad and grad school a more attainable goal. So, I want to thank you for your generosity and support. I would not be able to attend a university like Willamette otherwise.

Why did you choose your college and major?

I started working very young, and I’ve been fortunate to have had jobs in which I could positively impact target populations whether it was at risk youth, college students, patients in healthcare settings, migrant working families, native Spanish speakers, etc. Being the first in my family to attend university, I didn’t have a lot of guidance in choosing a career path. I wanted to try everything from education, healthcare, the arts and the list goes on. I found that public health is very intersectional and collaborative. I chose this major because I’ll be able to draw on various experiences combined with my studies to eventually promote population health and community resilience. The more I learned about what public health is, I realized it aligns with my values and is something I’ve ultimately strived for through past community service and work. I believe it is a human right for individuals and communities to have equitable access to resources that will enable them to have long and healthy lives, which is why I became a public health major. I also have the deepest respect for my advisor and mentor, whom has been a big support in completing my studies. There is a saying, somewhere along the lines of it takes a great teacher to spark a fire that keeps burning.

After graduation, I plan to…

Attend graduate school whether it’s an MBA program or eventually law school. I’d love to own my business.

Thank you for this scholarship. This means a lot to me because it allows me to focus on working additional clinical hours at the hospital, gaining valuable experience needed to enter the nursing profession.

After graduation, I plan to…

I plan to move to Southern California and work as a pediatric or ICU nurse.

Why did you choose your college and major?

I chose to go to the University of Portland because of the amazing nursing program, the wonderful community here, and the city of Portland! I chose nursing as my major because I have always felt a calling to help others. When my great grandmother got sick while I was in high school, it solidified my thoughts of wanting to purse nursing. I took care of her and loved every minute of it. I have been in the hospital a couple of times and understand how important nurses are and the role that we play in people’s lives.

Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?

As a low-income student and a person of color, this scholarship helped lessen my financial burdens. It was hard for my family to come up with the money for school; only my mom is supporting me is a lot of work for her. Thank you!

After graduation, I plan to…

After I graduate, I want to get my master's degree and do an internship.

Why did you choose your college and major?

It was God's will. I always wanted to go to a private Christian University; it fits my standards and is small and Christ-centered. I always wanted to learn psychology from a perspective to go out in the world and make a difference with Jesus Christ. Mental health is a severe issue and I want to help by listening.

This was my move-in day for college, and I had never seen my mom and older sister so proud of me! They always wanted this opportunity for me knowing they didn’t have it. I’m the first person in my family to go to college.

Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?

Without the Costco Wholesale Scholarship, I wouldn't have been able to make it through my senior year of college. Thank you so much for everything.

After graduation, I plan to…

After graduation, I would like to work for a company abroad and potentially receive my masters while living in another country. Thankfully, with this scholarship, I was able to study abroad and realize that I am very happy pursuing what I am doing and that living abroad is realistic to me now. My family and I will forever be grateful for this.

Why did you choose your college and major?

I chose my college because of how small yet big it can be. I did not want to attend a state school where I was going to fall through the cracks in classes of 100 or more students. I enjoy having a smaller classroom; it has made college more meaningful and worth it for me. I chose international relations as my major because I knew I wanted to work with politics. I wanted to work in politics without having to work in a law office. I love the idea of traveling for work and creating lasting, diverse connections with people from all over the world.

Noah Wong

Hometown and State: Newberg, OR
College or University Name: George Fox University
Major: Interdisciplinary Studies (Illustration and Cinematic Arts)
Class Standing: Senior
Pronouns: He/Him

Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?

Thank you so much for the Costco Wholesale Scholarship! I wasn't sure how I was going to cover this year's tuition. It's been a challenge as a family to pay for my college tuition with my mother and brother both being in college, as well. This scholarship helps me immensely by ensuring that I can cover a lot of financial needs for this school year. I feel blessed to receive this scholarship and thank you, again, for helping me fund my education.

Why did you choose your college and major?

I chose George Fox University because of the amazing community. I'm thankful to have a great college so close to home. I originally had planned to be a mechanical engineer major, however, because of the classes I took at community college I would have to take 4 years on top of the years I already was in college. I began speaking with the college and then found George Fox University's School of Communication and Design Department. Art had always been a part of my life; however, I hadn't considered the business side of it and how it can be used to make a living. Drawing is something I have done ever since I was little and growing up I discovered the wonders of YouTube and animation. I always wanted to tell stories but was never a good writer, so I told stories visually through drawing or little videos I would take on my parent's video camera. Whatever I chose for a major, I wanted it to be something I enjoyed doing, and since art is a major interest of mine, that is how I ended up choosing illustration and cinematic arts as my interdisciplinary studies focuses.

After graduation, I plan to…

After I graduate from George Fox University, I hope to use my illustration and cinematic arts degree to apply it professionally to advertising, social media content, or an animation studio. With advertising, I would love to showcase products and use my skills in motion graphics and illustration to create something unique. In terms of social media content, I currently have a job in social media content creation for my College's School of Communication and Design (SOC+D). I have been loving how I can incorporate both illustrations and video to share the amazing SOC+D and sharing the fun events they have. I also have a desire to create stories. Animation allows me to use both my illustration and cinematic arts disciplines to make amazing stories come to life. I have always loved the capabilities in animation that you would not be able to do in real life such as exaggerations of motion and emotion and the visually artistic designs that you can't get with live action. I really want to bring to life unique stories that haven't been seen anywhere else through animation so that more people are aware of these stories that they may not have heard of or seen otherwise. I know that whatever direction I go, God will guide me to the right decision, and who knows, maybe I will get to do all three!

Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?

Thank you for your support of my college education. I am a third-year double majoring in philosophy and global cultural studies. I am working toward my goals by taking a career class that helps me find internships before graduating from college. I am currently considering different graduate school programs for the future. I want to work as a journalist on environmental issues and public issues after I get my law degree. I feel challenged by the rigorous academia at Willamette University. I feel confident that I can succeed here academically and professionally. This scholarship has helped me cover some of my tuition fees. I am truly grateful for the support to continue attending college.

Why did you choose your college and major?

I decided to come to Willamette originally to study political science, but I have decided philosophy would be a better fit. Global cultural studies is very intriguing, as well.

After graduation, I plan to…
