Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?

It’s meaningful to me because I have been struggling this year to keep up with certain things at school, I’ve had to take extra shifts at work just to keep up on my bills and pay those back for helping me achieve my education. This scholarship helps me pay off some of my debt as well as helps me be able to take a break without having to stress so much and so thank you so much.

Why did you choose your college and major?

I chose Bushnell University because of their beliefs and kindness. When I was younger, I didn’t really care for school because it felt suffocating, lonely and just made me hate it, but that was until I was in my last year of middle school, as covid took over, I started to put my focus on things that kept me away from technology. My mother owned a daycare and so whenever I got the chance I would go help her, learning about behavior, personality and having two brothers on the spectrum gave me a new appreciation of the human mind and so I started to look into psychology but then I got stuck onto this book I found, it was about the human brain, how we see things, and etc. After all of that I just fell madly in love with psychology and the brain and the need of wanting to help people.

After graduation, I plan to…

Progress my education with psychology, achieving the goal of getting a doctorate but also getting a job to work in the clinical field in psychology helping the young and old, as well as being the first within my family to fulfill my education.

This was taken during our media day during the beginning of February. (I am on the bottom row, second from the right side)

Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?

This scholarship was very meaningful to me because it’s providing a lot of help for the financial side of my education. Before I started college I was afraid of how I would be able to fund my four years and beyond if I desired. I’m so thankful to have found Bushnell in the first place, because the scholarship opportunities here are extraordinary. It is positively impacting me to know that I am being considered for more and more scholarships, and I feel so blessed to have enough of them to go to this school without all of the worry of tremendous debt. Thank you!

Why did you choose your college and major?

I chose this college because my church mentioned it to me repeatedly, and I also did not really know where else I would want to go. I had previous plans to go to the University of Oregon for architecture or something art-related, however as I grew more in my faith, my desire to go to a public college known for its party scene didn’t fancy me. I got my FAFSA back from Bushnell and I got an offer to run track and field after I got accepted to the school, and the price overall was too perfect to walk away from. I then fit my plan to major in kinesiology because it sounded interesting, and then after a long while of thinking about it I didn’t think I’d like the responsibilities of that career path, so I switched my focus to psychology. I switched to psychology because I had always loved the idea of becoming a therapist or psychiatrist of some sort, and I knew at this point that it would take a lot more schooling if that’s what I really wanted, but I decided to accept the challenge nonetheless.

After graduation, I plan to…

Either pursue my Master’s, pursue my PHD or PsyD, or just get right into the work force. I’m leaving my options open because I believe that God will lead me to where I need to be. I also may take a gap year or two anyways just to get a feel for the workforce and to see what specifically I would be interested in.

Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?

This scholarship is meaningful because it makes me know I have people out there that believe in me. This makes me want to work harder and makes me thrive for success.

Why did you choose your college and major?

I chose Corban University because I loved the environment here and how nice everyone was. I also knew this was a place I can focus and become better in a lot of aspects of my life. I chose kinesiology because I wanted to keep working with athletes and this major and help me with continuing this path.

Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?

Thank you so much for this scholarship and for your generosity in choosing me to receive this scholarship. This scholarship is meaningful to me because my family has worked so hard and helped me get to where I am today. Receiving scholarship money is the biggest blessing, and I would not be attending Corban today if it weren't for the support I receive from the donors.

Why did you choose your college and major?

I chose Corban because of the community, the student body, and the size. I like how my classes are small; it's a great way to interact with others in a way that I feel a deeper, better connection. I love Chapel and the opportunity to grow closer with my peers and my student community. I chose elementary education because I truly have a desire for kids. I have grown up working at numerous camps and have found a passion in helping kids succeed and be the best they can be.

After graduation, I plan to…

I plan to become an elementary or middle school teacher, maybe in Oregon but would love to move to Washington in the future.

School or University Name: George Fox University
Major: Cinematic Arts with a Video Production Concentration
Class Standing: Junior
Pronouns: he/him

Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?

Thank you to the alliance for gifting me this scholarship. Receiving this scholarship feels like I’ve won the lottery because of how difficult my finances have been lately. I am extremely grateful for this scholarship and really hope to keep raising more money for my college education. In all honesty, being able to attend George Fox University has been a miracle of its own, and knowing that I’m constantly supported and loved means the world to me. I would not have been able to go to college without the support of individuals like you.

Why did you choose your college and major?

I chose to study Cinematic Arts because I felt that I fit in with the community of filmmakers and artists the most. I never really aspired to be a teacher or doctor, but I’ve always dreamed of being a director of movies one day. But out of all things, after studying for 2 years now at Fox, I’ve also realized that this major also makes me the happiest. I’ve learned so much over the last 2 years and can’t wait to take my experiences to Tokyo, Japan, where I will be studying this upcoming semester.

After graduation, I plan to…

After I graduate, I plan to do freelance work full-time, and God willing, live in my own place/apartment. On the side, I plan to start my own business, a company that hosts Christian artists around the world to collaborate and create meaningful works of art. I also plan on deepening my faith with God by serving at Church, camp, and other establishments.

Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?

As a first generation college student every bit of support and help means the world to me as I am so grateful for the opportunity I have to go to college and make my family proud. Your support doesn’t just help me cover tuition which is very expensive but it gives me motivation to keep going and makes me feel supported and for that I would like to say thank you. So many things have to add up for me to be at school and so I am extremely grateful for anyone that would generously be a part of making my education happen. Thank you once again and I pray that God blesses you for your generosity.

Why did you choose your college and major?

I chose Social Work because I have grown up as a pastor's kid in a family that emphasized the importance of service and showed me what it meant to live daily serving like Jesus did. I am passionate about living a life that reflects the selfless life of service that Jesus and my parents have exemplified to me since childhood. I would like to use my education to live out God’s will for my life which I believe is to reach the broken and help them to find healing. I was drawn to George Fox because it felt like a community where I could grow in faith, academics, and community in a way that was specific to me and my journey. I have really loved the community at Fox and have been extremely blessed to call myself a Bruin. I can’t imagine myself anywhere else.

After graduation, I plan to…

After graduation I would like to pursue a Masters degree in Social Work and either work as a counselor or pursue further education to obtain a clinical license that would allow me to work with hospital patients as a Clinical Social Worker.

Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?

Receiving this scholarship has been a true honor. I’m grateful to the donors for helping me pursue my studies and let me dream big. It’s been an incredible support to me and my family, and it has truly changed my life! As a first-generation immigrant student, opportunities can be limited, and my goals can sometimes feel “too big”. Just a few years ago, when we arrived in this country with nothing but the “American dream” I wouldn’t even imagine to be where I am today, and that pursuing higher education could be a reality… it seemed so far beyond my possibilities! Thanks to people like you, I’ve been able to continue my journey, dream big, and become a successful student at one of the best schools in the PNW! I couldn’t have made this without donors like you. Thank you for changing lives!

Why did you choose your college and major?

Since I was a kid, I always had a deep passion for music. At the age of 5, I picked up a guitar and immediately fell in love with it. After a long journey, I decided to pursue Music as a professional career. Simply, because I can’t imagine my life without it! I love the feeling of bringing music to life and the mystery behind how it has the power to connect one soul to another in the purest way. I believe my mission in this world is to use my creativity to create and bring more music to others’ lives. I also pursue a major in Latin American Studies, since I have a profound commitment with preserving and understanding the Latin culture, especially through my music. Studying different aspects of our diverse countries, our history, the strengths and struggles of my community is allowing me to enrich my music, become a better world citizen, know what I represent and how to do it in the most respectful, authentic and traditional way.
I chose Lewis and Clark College since it was the school who offered me the possibility to pursue both fields of study under the guidance of dedicated and renowned faculty; their Liberal arts pedagogy, the competitive student body, and the one-on-one attention you receive sounded like the perfect fit for me, which in fact, it has been one of the best decisions!

After graduation, I plan to…

I plan to continue my studies while developing my career as a musician with an emphasis in Latin music and original work. I want to use my voice and my instrument to become a reference for female Latin guitar players and composers/songwriters, represent my culture and heritage, make music in Spanish, and continue developing a unique sound in today’s music landscape. In the long term, I aspire to pursue a master’s and a Doctoral degree in Musical Arts and become a professor of music at the college level to support other students in the position I am today.

Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?

Thank you for all that you do. I've worked with kids as far as I can remember and its always been a dream of mine to be the teachers I had growing up with, like Ms. Alvarez. My second-grade teacher encouraged my creativity and loved each one of her students as her own. She saw our differences, and she taught us that we were important and that we deserve everything we wish for and more. The scholarships and grants I’ve received allow me to do just that, you are giving me the opportunity to be someone's Ms. Alvarez, thank you.

Why did you choose your college and major?

What brought me to Linfield was the size and location of campus. I moved to Salem a few years ago and it made me feel close enough to home but also far enough to branch out and try new things! Since being here, I’ve created friendships with other students, professors and staff members which is what I love most about Linfield: There’s always a chance to meet new people and make new connections! I belong to the following cultural clubs: Black Student Union, Hui ō Lōkahi, Latinx Adelante (LULA), Spanish Club; Languages: ASL, French, Spanish, Forensics/Speech/Debate; I’m an RA on campus & involved in Spanish here on campus!

After graduation, I plan to…

After Linfield, I plan to go into pre-school teaching or somewhere in early elementary!

Pronouns: she/her

Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?

Thank you so much for your generosity! This scholarship is incredibly meaningful to me because it allows me to continue my journey in higher education and also pursue my goal of becoming a future educator. This helps relieve financial stress and motivates me to keep working towards my goal of making a positive impact in the classroom.

Why did you choose your college and major?

I chose Pacific University because of the small campus and the close-knit community. I visited a couple times and from those visits I could truly see myself thriving and doing well here. Another reason I chose Pacific is because of the education program. I decided to major in education because there aren't many Pacific Islander teachers or teachers of color in general. I believe it's very important to have more representation in education. When students see teachers who look like them, it can inspire and motivate them to believe in their own abilities and potential.

After graduation, I plan to…

After graduation, I plan to return to Guam to teach, as there is a strong need for educators there, specifically at Guam Adventist Academy. I also hope to expand my work and experience by teaching in the other islands across Micronesia to help provide quality education and opportunities throughout Micronesia.

Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?

I am honored to be chosen as a recipient of the Alliance Joseph E. Weston Public Foundation Scholarship. My whole life, my dad has encouraged and supported me emotionally and financially in my journey through college. This scholarship is incredibly helpful to my family and me and will lessen our financial burden. Thank you so much for your support.

Why did you choose your college and major?

Growing up, I always had a passion for math and learning. I always knew I was going to go to college and do something with this passion; I just wasn’t quite sure what yet. When I was first searching for a college to attend, I was so unsure of what type of school I wanted but after my first visit here at Pacific University I knew this is where I was supposed to be. I fell in love with this beautiful campus and the school’s dedication to making sure that class sizes stay small. This has allowed me to work closely with my peers and professors. My first semester here I took Accounting 201 and declared my major within the first month. I added the Management concentration so that if I decide that I want to start my own company I will have the skills to do so. Then I took a business travel course to Greece and loved traveling so much that I added on the International Business focus soon after.

After graduation, I plan to…

Once I graduate, I would like to take my CPA (certified public accountant) exam as soon as possible. I will hopefully already have a job lined up at a smaller to medium-sized firm where I will stay for a few years to become more accustomed to the career. However, I would eventually like to have the opportunity to travel as part of my career. So, I plan to seek out a job that involves travel, whether that be at the same firm or a larger one. I have really enjoyed the aspect of adapting to different countries cultural norms and customs in my International Business and Marketing classes and would love a job that incorporates this in the position.

College or University Name: Reed College
Major: English
Minor: Film & Media Studies
Class standing: Sophomore
Pronouns: she/her

Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?

I’m the first within my family to attend a four-year college. Being able to attend a great institution like Reed College not only expands my opportunities post graduation, but also allows me to set an example for my young nephews who I hope will realize that an education beyond high school is possible for them. Without the financial assistance I’ve been given from the Joseph E. Weston scholarship, I wouldn’t have been able to attend Reed College or gain the opportunities that it has so far provided me. Thank you for the support you’ve given me — because of you, I can afford to attend a school that I love and show my younger family that college isn’t inaccessible to them.

Why did you choose your college and major?

Applying for schools during my senior year, I was drawn to Reed College because of its reputation for academic rigor and unique approach to education — while it’s misleading to say that we don’t receive grades, they are deemphasized. I also felt it would be the best place to explore my creative interests while receiving a well-rounded education. And it doesn’t hurt that the campus is beautiful. English has always been my favorite subject, and during my first year of college some of my best connections were made within the English department — my then-English professor, now academic advisor, gave me a position over the summer working for the Environmental Humanities department. During the next three years, I hope to become better-read and do some writing of my own.

After graduation, I plan to…

After graduation I’ll either work for a year or two, or go straight to graduate school. I’m considering getting my master’s degree in library science. In addition to whatever I decide to occupy myself with, I hope to continue pursuing my interests in visual media and writing.

College or University Name: University of Portland
Major: Nursing
Class standing: Senior
Pronouns: she/her

Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?

This scholarship is meaningful to me because it is helping support my education, which is valuable to me. I have always loved school and I always knew I wanted to go to college. However, I always thought that I would have to settle for a community college because it seemed more financially attainable. It turned out that thanks to my parents' support and the support of generous donors, I was able to attend a school like University of Portland, which still feels like a dream to me today, even as a senior. Thank you for supporting me and my parents, and for being so generous!

Why did you choose your college and major?

I chose the University of Portland because it has a really good direct-entry nursing program. I also loved the idea of living in Portland. Additionally, I am Catholic, so I loved the idea of having additional resources to grow in my faith. I chose the major of nursing because it allows me to serve others in their most vulnerable moments and be a source of hope in times where hope may feel lost.

After graduation, I plan to…

After graduation, I plan to work somewhere near my hometown. Ideally, I would love to work in a pediatric or women's health unit at a hospital. I plan to find a workplace where I feel supported, which will help me better support others.

Willow Williams

College or University Name: University of Portland

Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?

This scholarship was granted to me at a time in which money and figuring out how to pay for my education was causing a lot of anxiety. I would like to say thank you to The Alliance and the generous donors of this scholarship because now I have tuition for my last year of college fully covered by scholarships. I am incredibly grateful to have had this additional stress off my shoulder so that I can focus on my education and make sure the money I have can go to essentials.

Why did you choose your college and major?

Majoring in nursing and being only one semester away from receiving my BSN has genuinely been a dream come true and a decade in the making. I have always loved helping people and taking care of those around me, so becoming a bedside nurse seemed like a perfect fit. Despite growing up in an artistic family that pushed alternative paths rather than college, I was always fascinated by science, and I have loved every minute of higher education. University of Portland was originally not my first choice for college, but it had the exact type of nursing program that I was looking for and ended up being one of the best decisions I have made in my life. I have known I wanted to be a nurse since I was a kid, and I knew that I wanted a four-year program directly out of high school, so choosing University of Portland for nursing was simply a great fit.

After graduation, I plan to…

Although I don’t have an exact plan for after graduation, I know the path I want to take with my career. I loved my clinical placement at Legacy Emanuel on the medical surgical unit, so I hope to get hired in a med/surge field early in my career. Med/surge units provide a very well-rounded education and practice of skills, so I think it would lay a solid foundation for the rest of my nursing career. I ultimately want to work as a travel nurse at some point in my career, so I can learn how different regions and hospitals approach medicine and nursing.

Thank you very much for this scholarship which is truly meaningful to me. It has helped relieve some financial pressure of attending college and has allowed me to better focus on my academic and career goals. I attend Warner Pacific University, where I plan to double major in kinesiology and sports medicine. Your support helps give me extra financial stability for bills and allows me to save a bit extra for future expenses. This scholarship brings me one step closer to my goal of becoming a physical therapist, where I hope to help others reach their best physical well-being. I am deeply grateful for your generosity and for believing in students like me.

Why did you choose your college and major?

I chose Warner Pacific University because I had heard about its supportive community, smaller class sizes, and the strong relationships students can build with professors. I wanted to attend a school where I could feel supported and encouraged as a student. I chose to major in Kinesiology and Sports Medicine because I have always had an interest about human body movement and its ability to heal itself with guided exercises after undergoing physical therapy myself. My goal is to become a physical therapist, and these majors give me the foundation I need to purse that path. I am passionate about helping people regain mobility, reduce pain, and return to daily activities.

Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?

This scholarship is extremely meaningful to me because my family and I work hard. The representation of this scholarship just validates the long hours and hard work put into my studies and beyond. It makes the thirteen-plus-hour days feel validated and I feel noticed for this work so thank you very much from the bottom of my heart.

Why did you choose your college and major?

When I was first starting on my college journey I wanted to focus on the best way to earn a lot of money in order to make my family as comfortable as possible; however after my first few quarters my family sat me down for a heart-to-heart and they told me to do something that I love and money will come, and if it didn’t we will still live comfortable because we are rich in bonds. So I decided to declare as a communications for three reasons. The first was my love for making videos which includes script writing, editing and management of the platform. The next was writing, which I promptly fell in love with after high school and allowed me to write two books, one being a compilation of short stories and the next being a full fledged novel. Finally, my love for talking with people and leadership, which I have discovered over my life at various places of work. All of these aspects of what I enjoyed doing fell very nicely into the degree of communications. As for choosing Willamette, it was simply due to convenience of travel, but as I have been here I have fallen in love with the institution.

After graduation, I plan to…

I honestly am not sure yet. I used to overthink my future, but now I plan to play it out. This being said, I plan to get an internship and grow both as a person and in my career.
