Ryan Abueg
Hometown and State: Hillsboro, OR
School or University Name: Multnomah University
Major: Youth Educational Ministries
Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?
Thank you! I was not expecting a scholarship, and this support will help cover school expenses that I have been worried about.
After graduation, I plan to…
Go on to grad school to pursue a counseling degree.
Why did you choose your college and major?
I have always had a heart to work with youth and heard that Multnomah has an excellent program in youth educational ministries. After being here for two years, I can say how true that is.
Elias Banjar
Hometown and State: Corvallis, OR
School or University Name: Willamette University
Majors: Biochemistry, Spanish
Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?
As a first-generation pre-med student and double major whose family struggles financially, this award has enabled me to continue my education alleviated from the financial burdens that pursuing my degrees has placed on me and my family. I sincerely thank you for this scholarship. It has helped me tremendously and I am deeply grateful.
Why did you choose your college and major?
Willamette University provides incredible academic support that I did not see offered at other institutions. Additionally, I fell in love with the community here. Chemistry, ever since taking the AP course in high school, has fascinated me. It also helps me meet many of the pre-requisites for medical school. Similarly, ever since middle school, I have wondered what it would be like to be fluent in another language. To this day, learning Spanish has been a passion of mine that I plan to continue developing beyond my major.
After graduation, I plan to…
I plan to attend medical school after Willamette. My dream, ever since learning what those without universal health care must endure to survive, is to provide accessible and affordable medical services to those in low-income areas and with language barriers. Health care disparity composes one of the biggest problems in the world. Right now, I am learning a lot about interpreters and their duties in various workplaces. Evidently, there is no perfect interpreter, and languages cannot be perfectly translated. Fluency in the language of the person with whom one speaks is the best way to understand them. Therefore, I hope to fluently communicate with my patients directly rather than through an interpreter while also helping to solve this disparity.
Hi, this is me, Elias! I am a biochemistry and Spanish double major on the pre-med track at Willamette University. Learning is my favorite hobby! And while some may argue that a jack of all trades is a master of none, I say life is too fascinating to just stick to one.

Annabelle Broderick
Hometown and State: Scappoose, OR
School or University Name: University of Portland
Major: Nursing
Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?
Thank you for choosing me to be a recipient of this scholarship. Because of your generosity, I am able to put this money towards my tuition. This pandemic has been very hard financially for my family and I am grateful for this opportunity to put money towards furthering my education. My family and I thank you for changing the lives of students in need.
After graduation, I plan to…
After graduation, I plan to work in the Portland area on the medsurg unit at Providence. My goal is to become an ER nurse and move to Denver, Colorado. In the future, I would like to go back to school to obtain my master’s degree and doctorate in nursing.
Why did you choose your college and major?
I chose University of Portland because I know that they have a highly credible and reputable nursing program in the state of Oregon. I want to become a nurse because I am passionate about helping others and giving back to those in need. I have been inspired by my grandparents because they have always taken care of me since I was a little girl and I want to be able to take care of them using my nursing knowledge and skills.
Majestik De Luz
Hometown and State: Seaside, OR
School or University Name: Pacific University
Major: Philosophy & Psychology
Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?
Thank you so much for your support in my academic career! This scholarship allowed me to not stress too much about finances and focus more on my work. As someone who has had to pull out personal loans to make it this far, I really appreciate any assistance; every dollar covered is a weight off my shoulders.
After graduation, I plan to…
After graduation, I plan on attending graduate school on a doctoral track. Ideally, I want to be able to focus on philosophy while continuing some sense of psychology, but I am open to all possibilities. At some point, whether right out of grad school or thirty years after, I want to be a professor and teach at a private university such as Pacific and continue to make a difference in the lives of students.
Why did you choose your college and major?
I chose Pacific because it is a gorgeous campus and the staff/faculty here are incredible human beings. I have had so much support in my three years at this university. I could not imagine being anywhere else. I chose psychology because the mind fascinates me and how different life events change the minds and perspectives of people is endlessly interesting. I chose philosophy because it has turned into my passion, it ties into SO many different disciplines and has helped me to grow as a person in various ways. Philosophy helped me to realize my love for working with other students in higher education as well as helped me to be able to look at topics from different lenses and "try on" different points of view, a very valuable skill these days.

Sheyla Dorantes Sanchez
Hometown and State: Portland, OR
School or University Name: Lewis & Clark College
Major: English
Minor: Ethnic Studies
Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?
This scholarship really helped me pull through this academic year after the many difficulties my family has faced during the pandemic. I have no other words than to say I am immensely grateful for this generous donation. This scholarship has opened the pathway to my future. Thank you.
Why did you choose your college and major?
I chose Lewis & Clark because I knew that it would offer me the opportunities and challenges I craved. While my major might not be the flashiest, I have explored so many other classes and different topics that I feel I have received a very well-rounded education. My passion is poetry, and I am so excited to be on the creative writing track within the English major to focus on something I really love.
After graduation, I plan to…
After graduation, I will continue my education in graduate school for teaching. My goal is to become a High School English teacher. I want to teach a culturally representative curriculum and to teach students the power of language and the power of their own voices.
Emily Green
Hometown and State: Portland, OR
School or University Name: Warner Pacific University
Major: Criminal Justice
Minor: Psychology
Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?
This scholarship is meaningful to me because it allows me to be thankful for every opportunity I get while pursuing my degree. Thank you for granting me this scholarship as I continue to pursue my dream and future career. I am very grateful that, as a student who is paying out of pocket, I’m given a little extra relief to help pay for my education.
Why did you choose your college and major?
I chose my college because it was closer to home, and I liked the one-on-one instruction with my professors. Coming from a high school where students were just numbers, it really helps me be more engaged with my professors. When I need help, they are there to help me and the class sizes make a difference in my learning. I chose my major because I am very fascinated with the idea of working in the forensic science field. Thanks to my high school forensic science class, I’m eager to learn more about the crime scene investigation field. I never knew what I wanted to do until I was told I needed another science class to graduate, and I chose forensic science. I watch a lot of CSI, Criminal Minds, and Law & Order Special Victims Unit and I find myself sometimes taking notes mentally or physically. I have always found that field very interesting and I am determined to make my dream come true.
After graduation, I plan to…
After graduation I plan to further my education by getting my master’s degree.
I love to explore my city and be out and enjoying it as much as I can. I am a city girl!
Priscilla Kennedy
Hometown and State: Eugene, OR

Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?
This scholarship meant so much to me because my family and I have been working hard to keep up with tuition costs. This scholarship ensures that I can continue my education. Thank you from the very bottom of my heart.
Why did you choose your college and major?
I chose Bushnell because it is near home, has a small community, and has an E-sports team.
After graduation, I plan to…
I hope to coach E-sports!
Breanna Maciel
Hometown and State: Tillamook, OR
School or University Name: George Fox University
Major: Biology
Minor: Chemistry
Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?
This scholarship means the world to me because, coming from a large family, funding college can be difficult. Thank you so much for this! I look forward to using this financial aid to further my education and achieve my goals.
After graduation, I plan to…
Attend medical school to become a doctor and help those in need.
Why did you choose your college and major?
I chose George Fox because I really loved the community and opportunities that were presented to me. I chose to study Biology/Pre-med because it has been my dream since I was little to become a doctor and use my love of science to help people get well physically as well as mentally!
Bethany Michels
Hometown and State: Gold Beach, OR
School or University Name: Corban University
Major: Elementary Education
Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?
Paying for college isn’t easy, so I'm always grateful to any scholarship that is awarded to me. Thank you for aiding me in my journey for my career.
Why did you choose your college and major?
I walked on Corban University's campus and almost instantly felt like I was at a second home. The environment is so welcoming, and I love being in a school where I can grow spiritually with other believers.
After graduation, I plan to…
After graduation, I plan to start teaching. Preferably, either kindergarten or first grade. I had never thought that I would be a teacher. Both my mom and grandma were teachers, and I didn't think that was my path. However, God brought into my life a spectacular opportunity to help in the classrooms at home, and I fell in love.
Azriel Munns
Hometown and State: Vancouver, WA
School or University Name: Multnomah University
Major: Exercise Science
Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?
This scholarship is meaningful to me because I don’t have the financial aid to pay for this semester. Thank you.
After graduation, I plan to…
I plan on becoming a professional basketball player or basketball trainer.
Why did you choose your college and major?
I chose exercise science to help benefit kids and teenagers become better at basketball. I have a background in basketball and, back home, I have 12 students who I train for free.
I was in the Multnomah university gym putting in work for the 2021-2022 season for basketball.
I am a defender for the UP Women’s Lacrosse Club! Playing lacrosse is one of my top favorite memories from UP. I’m front row, on the right, number 24.
Danette Pelayo
Hometown and State: Eugene, OR
School or University Name: University of Portland
Major: Sociology/Criminology concentration and Spanish
Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?
Receiving my bachelor’s degree has been a goal of mine. I want to make my parents proud of all the sacrifices they've made so that I could get to where I am now. I am honored to have received this scholarship to help me accomplish this lifelong dream. Thank you for your financial support of my journey. I am so close to the finish line!
After graduation, I plan to…
I am still exploring my options for after graduation, but I hope to work in a career that helps people, especially within the Latino community.
Why did you choose your college and major?
I chose to attend the University of Portland because I liked how small it is and the sense of community that they encourage among their students. UP has always made me feel like I belonged. I chose to study sociology and Spanish because I want to work and help people.
Nancy Romero
Hometown and State: Salem, OR
School or University Name: George Fox University
Major: International Studies & Sociology
Minor: French & Hispanic Cultural Studies
Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?
Thank you for this scholarship and supporting my education. Like many, these past two years have been financially difficult for my family and me. Being able to pay for college has been particularly difficult these past couple of months. However, thanks to your generous help, I can continue to afford another year of school and work less hours to dedicate more time to my studies. Furthermore, because this scholarship has helped pay for the rest of my college tuition, my parents are now able to invest and save more for my younger siblings' college education.
After graduation, I plan to…
After graduation, I plan to get a TESOL certificate and teach English abroad, either in Latin America or Europe. I plan to do this for 4 to 5 years before coming back to the United States to teach here, too.
Why did you choose your college and major?
While there are many reasons why I chose to attend George Fox University, one of the main reasons that convinced me to choose GFU was due to its welcoming environment from all the students and staff. When I first visited the campus, I immediately felt at home and knew this is where I wanted to spend the next four years studying. Furthermore, GFU had all the programs I was interested in pursuing as a major and provided the opportunity to students to study abroad with good, reputable programs. The reason I chose to major in international studies and sociology is because I have a great interest in learning more about other countries, their cultures, and groups of people. After almost four years of being an international studies and sociology major, I am very pleased with my decision and find great joy in all the courses I continue to take.

Alexander Sigaran
Hometown and State: Portland, OR
School or University Name: Linfield University
Major: Environmental Studies
Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?
This scholarship truly changed my life. It has allowed me to pursue higher education and take a huge step forward by moving out of my parent’s home. This support is a huge steppingstone in my life. Thank you.
After graduation, I plan to…
Get a job as a park ranger! I want to continue exploring jobs in the environmental field, and I hope to be able to do that with my degree. I would also consider going to graduate school or joining the Peace Corps or AmeriCorps programs, again, related to outdoor work.
Why did you choose your college and major?
I chose Linfield because of its small class sizes and it being somewhat close to my city (Portland). I chose my major when I discovered that I like to work outdoors and get my hands dirty. When I work outdoors, it doesn't quite feel like work to me. I want to continue pursuing a career in the parks system as I have been involved with Portland Parks & Rec for some years now.
Amanda Torres-Sanchez
Hometown and State: Springfield, OR
School or University Name: Bushnell University
Major: Bible and Theology
Minor: Psychology and Spanish
Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?
Thank you so much for your generous gift! With this scholarship, I can focus more of my attention on my education rather than the stress of my school payments. College payments can be so daunting, and any help is immensely appreciated. Through this scholarship, you have a part in investing in my education and play a role in getting me closer to my goals of serving others in my community. I am so grateful for your support of my education, and I appreciate your generosity. Thank you so much!
Why did you choose your college and major?
I chose Bushnell University because it was important for me to attend a school that valued faith, community, and service, which made Bushnell the perfect place. Bushnell offers so many opportunities for each of these things and it is fun discovering them all. What really drew me to Bushnell was the tight knit community and I was excited to build relationships and connections that would hopefully last beyond my college years. I chose my major because I am eager to learn more about God and this is the perfect opportunity to grow in my faith, especially with the great professors that we have. In addition to my major, I chose to double minor in psychology and Spanish because I really enjoy learning about human behavior, and I also wanted to solidify my Spanish language skills.
After graduation, I plan to…
After graduation, I hope to work in a nonprofit organization in Lane County that supports children in the community. Specifically, I would like to fundraise for a nonprofit by organizing and planning events as well as community outreach. Whether or not I start at a nonprofit organization as soon as I graduate, my overall goal is to actively serve my community and finding different opportunities to do that excites me!
Hello, I’m Caitlin Truong! I plan on majoring in vision science and becoming an optometrist.
Caitlin Truong
Hometown and State: Portland, OR
School or University Name: Pacific University
Major: Optometry
Why was this scholarship meaningful to you?
This scholarship provides a more accessible education for me. As most people know, the pandemic has struck many households hard. Before the pandemic, my mother had a medical incident that resulted in her job loss because she couldn’t perform with her injuries. This meant our family no longer had a source of income. Once the pandemic hit, it made our financial situation even more difficult. So, by receiving this financial assistance, I have never felt more support and encouragement to follow the path that has given me a purpose. Thank you to everyone who has taken part in this decision to allow me to have access to a financially stable education. It means the world to me.
After graduation, I plan to…
I plan to graduate, and then attend Pacific University's college of Optometry!
Why did you choose your college and major?
I chose Pacific University because I was looking for optometry schools in the U.S. and found the closest and best one to my home so that I could be with my family. This also helps me to save more financially than going somewhere further away from home. I also chose this major because of my family. When I say this, you may think they pushed me to pursue this path. On the contrary, my family pushed me to go into business. I began to think about my familial ancestry and thought about my last living grandparent who suffered from diabetes and lost vision due to not having access to proper eye care. All she wanted was to see her grandchild, but sadly passed away a year after I was born. I want to major in vision science/optometry, not only because it intrigues me educationally, but because I believe this path is a path to many other paths, like opening nonprofits and being able to help those who struggle with access to healthcare.
